Paycheck Fairness Act

A much needed update of the 45-year-old Equal Pay Act, the Paycheck Fairness Act is a comprehensive bill that would create stronger incentives for employers to follow the law, empower women to negotiate for equal pay, and strengthen federal outreach, education and enforcement efforts.

The bill would also deter wage discrimination by strengthening penalties for equal pay violations and by prohibiting retaliation against workers who ask about employers' wage practices or disclose their own wages. This critical piece of legislation can help create a climate where pay discrimination is not tolerated, and give the courts the enforcement tools it needs to make real progress on pay equity.

More than forty five years after the passage of the Equal Pay Act of 1963, women earn, on average, only 77 cents for every dollar earned by a man – and for women of color the wage gap is even greater. Historic workplace discrimination and an undervaluing of the work women perform are largely to blame. But in these tough times, women and their families cannot afford to bear the burden of history and should not merely survive. For the sake of this country, women and their families must thrive. The Paycheck Fairness Act would help move us in the right direction. It would close the loopholes in our equal pay laws, prohibit retaliation against workers who ask about or share wage information, and would empower women to better negotiate salary and benefit increases.
