Issue

Increase the federal minimum wage

Background

The 99% need a raise. While CEOs make millions and corporations make billions, we are struggling to make ends meet. Increasingly middle class jobs have been replaced by low-wage work and millions of Americans have lost the chance to realize their dreams.

The minimum wage can’t support our families. $7.25 an hour, the federal minimum wage, amounts to only $15,080 a year. That’s more than $7000 below the federal poverty line for a family of four. People who work for a living should be able to support their families and live off their wages.

Contact your US Representative today and ask them to support hard working men and women by co-sponsoring The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2012.

This bill would raise the federal minimum wage 85 cents a year for three years, bringing it to $9.80 by fall 2014.
Starting in 2015, it would then adjust the minimum wage each year to keep pace with the rising cost of living, as 10 states currently do.
And it would raise the minimum wage for tipped employees – which has been frozen at a meager $2.13 for more than 20 years – to 70% of the regular minimum wage.

Act today and contact your US Representative and ask them to support hard working men and women by co-sponsoring The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2012.

The Fair Minimum Wage Act Of 2012

Dear Representative,

Working families are struggling to make ends meet. Today, even if you work 40 hours a week at a minimum wage job, you still only make around $15,000 a year.

I urge you to join Representative George Miller as a co-sponsor of the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2012.

It has been three years since workers saw a minimum wage increase and the real value of the minimum wage today buys less than it did in 1956.

And while the regular minimum wage has not increased in three years, our nation’s tipped workers have not seen a raise in their required pay since 1991. Their minimum hourly rate is just $2.13 when tips cover the rest.

It’s time to raise the minimum wage.

The minimum wage is about valuing and respecting work. Anyone who works hard and plays by the rules should not live in poverty. Yet 47 million Americans now qualify as the working poor. Raising the minimum wage helps families by making ends meet. By increasing the minimum wage, workers have more money to spend, especially in their local communities.

Hard working men and women deserve to ability to work and earn enough to take care of their families. Please co-sponsor The Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2012 today.
