Take Action for Equal Pay Day

Paycheck Fairness Act

The Paycheck Fairness Act is comprehensive legislation that updates the Equal Pay Act of 1963. It will:

*strengthen penalties courts may impose for violations of existing equal pay laws
*prohibit retaliation against workers who inquire about or share wage information
*empower women to better negotiate for equal pay.

Approved by a bipartisan effort in House of Representatives, after the passage and signing of the historic Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, it is the next step toward ending wage discrimination.

Deadline for action: 4/26/2010.

Take Action for Paid Sick Days

Paid Sick Days

Working Women across the country need equal pay, children's health insurance, AND paid sick days in order to support their families. The Healthy Families Act would guarantee a minimum of seven paid sick days to cover more routine employee and family illness. Right now 80% of low wage workers don't have a single paid sick day. Too many people are forced to go to work sick for fear of losing a days pay. Parents often have to choose between taking care of a sick child and possibly facing job loss. No one should have to choose between their family or their job. Ask your Representative and Senators to co-sponsor the Healthy Families Act today!

Support the Employment Non-Discrimination Act

ENDA

Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA) has introduced ENDA. This is a bill that we can really get behind, as it would protect all workers from discrimination, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Join us in telling Congress that all lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people have a right to protection from employment discrimination.

Use the form below to urge your member of Congress to pass ENDA

Support Paid Parental Leave

Paid Parental Leave Act S.354

The Federal Employees Paid Parental Leave Act will guarantee federal workers four weeks of paid parental leave for a new child, as a first step toward universal paid leave.

Providing paid leave to parents is only fair to working families who need to both care for a new family member as well as maintain an income. Most industrialized nations have provided paid parental leave for decades.

Paid parental leave for 2.7 million federal workers can be the model that we can work to achieve for the rest of the country. This important "balancing work and family" legislation would help ensure that federal workplace benefits are competitive with the private sector and it also sets an important precedent demonstrating that our country values the "work" that parents and caregivers provide.

Deadline for action: 9/27/2009.

Stand up for the middle class!

Employee Free Choice Act

The Employee Free Choice Act, supported by a bipartisan coalition in Congress, would enable working people to bargain for better benefits, wages and working conditions by restoring workers freedom to choose for themselves whether to join a union. It would:

* Remove current obstacles to employees who want collective bargaining.

* Guarantee that workers who can choose collective bargaining are able to achieve a contract.

* Allow employees to form unions by signing cards authorizing union representation.

Support the Healthy Families Act

The Healthy Families Act, federal legislation currently on the table, would guarantee that every worker has paid sick days

Please urge your U.S. Representative to co-sponsor the Healthy Families Act. This important legislation would guarantee up to seven paid sick days per year for workers to recover from their own illness or care for a sick family member.

Working people shouldn't be forced to risk their jobs to take care of themselves or their families. Yet, nearly half of all workers do not have a single paid sick day to care for themselves or a family member when they are ill.

Swine Flu, a potentially pandemic virus, has become a public health emergency in the U.S. The CDC is recommending that if people feel sick, they should see a doctor and stay home. Without paid sick days, working people do not have the option to stay home without losing much-needed income or possibly their jobs. Most often, workers have no choice but to go to work sick, risking the spread of illness.

Right now, we cannot take this chance. The Healthy Families Act will provide everyone the chance to stay home, ensuring that Swine Flu does not continue to spread and turn into a full-blown pandemic.
